4 Harvest Celebration Activities and Ideas

As soon as the leaves start to fall and the days become shorter, there’s no mistaking that Autumn is in the air and with that comes the harvest season. The harvest season is all about being thankful for the food that has been grown throughout the year and appreciating those who put in the hard work. From historical and religious elements to a sense of community, here are four harvest celebration activities and ideas to enjoy.

Sing Harvest Songs

One very fun and memorable harvest tradition is to sing harvest-themed songs. Harvest festivals wouldn't be the same without some great songs to sing, so it’s worth finding a selection and getting everyone involved!

The beauty of singing is that many of the songs focused on the harvest season include important messages such as how food gets onto our plates, where food comes from and the importance of not wasting food. This wonderful Let's Get Singing -Harvest digital download pack has a selection of great songs that will provide fun, yet educational messaging for all ages.

Write a Poem

Poems are another fantastic way to celebrate the harvest season. By writing a poem, you are able to really think about what elements are associated with harvest, from the Autumn season to the foods gathered. This provides a great opportunity to focus on what you are grateful and thankful for, and put that into words for others to enjoy.

Here is a lovely example of a very popular harvest poem to help give some inspiration:

“Apples are red and pumpkins are round,

Harvest time is on the ground.

Thank you for the food we eat,

a harvest blessing, warm and sweet”

Get Creative

With the harvest season comes all kinds of beautiful colours and textures ready to be explored. Why not make the most of the season by collecting leaves from outside for a vibrant piece of art, or perhaps draw some favourite foods gathered during the harvest season? You could also look at creating wreaths or other harvest festival decorations to celebrate.

Whether it’s drawing, painting or other arts & crafts, there are lots of exciting ways to enjoy the harvest festival and get your creative juices flowing.

Host a Harvest Assembly

Perhaps one of the best ways to celebrate the harvest festival is to host a harvest-themed assembly for the whole school to enjoy. With so many wonderful harvest songs, poems and stories, there are endless opportunities to educate and inspire, whilst having fun at the same time. From a range of autumn and harvest songs, covering topics such as being thankful and understanding what harvest is, to interactive assembly ideas that get the whole group involved, it's easy and fun to celebrate the harvest season.
