Licences

Performance Licence: You need a performance licence to perform our show to anyone other than pupils and staff. Our licences are simple - one price allows you to perform the show as many times as you like during a twelve month period.

Filming/Streaming Licence: If you plan to film your performance and manufacture DVDs for distribution, stream content on an internet site or on social media, you will also need to purchase this licence.

stable and laid in a manger. From the initial visit by Angel Gabriel, the
declaration of the census by Caesar Augustus and the journey from Nazareth,
to the shock of the shepherds and the arrival of the Three Wise Men, this
lovely, traditional nativity brings the age-old story to life with an engaging
script and six memorable, uplifting songs.

Alongside the physical book, the digital download pack comprises all the songs, backing tracks, lyric slides and full book as a pdf. A CD is also available as an alternative or addition to the download pack. For a little extra, the editable Word.doc of the full script can also be purchased when the musical and a performance licence are bought, making it easy to adapt and adjust as you need to.

Overview

The story of the birth of Jesus is one of wonder, of resilience, of kindness and of belief. For those who have read it, heard it or seen it many times before, it is so familiar as to be commonplace – but it remains a fascinating and timeless tale, full of moments of great drama, with the highs and lows that mark all great stories. This version, ‘Away On A Silent Night’, is a simple, traditional retelling, respectful of the biblical elements with just a touch of artistic license here and there to provide additional characters.

We hope it engages its young cast and they have a wonderful time bringing it to life on stage.

Synopsis

The opening song welcomes the audience to the performance, asks them to pay close attention, and invites them to travel back in time to Bethlehem over 2000 years ago (BACK TO BETHLEHEM).

Our narrators introduce us to the town of Nazareth. Mary, engaged to be married to a carpenter called Joseph, is visited by an angel, who tells her that she is to give birth to a son, a gift from God for the people, and that she is to call him Jesus. Mary is surprised, but has faith in God. Joseph is also surprised, but is told in a dream that all will be well.

Following the declaration of a census by Caesar Augustus, Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem to be registered and counted (THIS IS THE ROAD). The journey is a difficult one, especially for Mary who is now heavily pregnant. They look for a place to stay, but all the rooms are already taken. Fortunately, an innkeeper takes pity on Mary and Joseph and shows them to a nearby stable that he owns. There, baby Jesus is born (AWAY ON A SILENT NIGHT). Meanwhile, shepherds on the hills above Bethlehem are stunned at the arrival of angels, telling them of the birth of Jesus (COUNTING SHEEP). They hurry to the stable to see him. And they are not the only visitors: three wise men are travelling from the east to be there (THEY CAME FROM THE EAST). Upon arrival, they offer their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh as the cast celebrate the arrival of Christmas (JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS).

The play has been written with 36 speaking parts, though this could easily be adapted (suggestions in the book).

There is also plenty to do for a large ensemble. All characters could be played both by boys and girls, with names altered to suit if felt necessary.
