Overview

‘Jack & The Beanstalk’ must be one of the most famous of all fairy tales, known and loved by generation after generation of children, and a mainstay of bedtime stories the world over. Its origins are less well-known, with one school of thought even placing it at over 5000 years old, though only first published in print in the 1700s. Its simple storyline and structure make it an ideal choice for adaptation and augmentation, and the addition of songs and music a near-inevitable part of the process. This musical version, ‘BEANSTALK’, keeps many elements of the original tale, but – much like the stalk itself – twists this way and that before branching off in a new direction entirely.

Synopsis

A group of beans host a radio show introducing rock star Jack, a young musician from Windy Bottom (This Is Our Town). We flash back to where it all began, as Jack’s stressed mum, Jill, discovers her distracted, aspiring musician son has been fired from his farm job during a devastating drought. Facing financial ruin, Jill reluctantly decides they must sell their loyal, flatulent cow. Before rushing to a town meeting, she sends Jack to market with the cow, hoping to raise enough money for food.

At the town hall, Farmer Macdonald delivers grim news: the drought has destroyed the crops, and there isn’t enough food to last the winter. The mayor suggests using the town savings to buy food, but Mr Dosh, the bursar, reveals there’s no money left! The town pulls together and devises a plan: a weekend concert, charging visitors for tickets and performers to take part.

Meanwhile, Jack has failed to sell the cow and is heading home, defeated. He meets bandmate Billy, who tells him about the concert and their hope of performing. Then Shady appears, offering to buy the cow in exchange for beans, promising magic, friendship and opportunity (Oh What A Marvellous Cow). Jack accepts, but Jill is furious when she discovers what he has done and throws the beans out of the window.

After the townspeople leave the hall, Miss Mayor, Mrs Lesson and Farmer Macdonald reveal their shocking secret: they have been stealing the town’s money for years to fund luxury holidays and extravagant lifestyles (Greed).

Overnight, a giant beanstalk appears outside Jack and Jill’s home (Beanstalk)! They realise it has grown from Jack’s beans. Unable to resist, Jack climbs – eventually persuading his reluctant Mum to follow him into the clouds (Read All About It).

At the top, friendly giants Bash and Blast enjoy breakfast with their Golden Goose, reminiscing about Windy Bottom. We discover the mayor, threatened by the town’s affection for Bash, spread cruel rumours about him and his wife, driving them out of town. When Jack and Jill arrive, Bash hides in fear (Open Your Heart), while Blast and Golden Goose welcome them. But when they leave to help Bash after a spectacular sneeze, Jack steals a bag of the giants’ gold to pay for his band to enter the concert.

Back in Windy Bottom, rehearsals are underway when disaster strikes: the town hall roof is ripped away by the giant’s sneeze, leaving the concert without a venue. Jack and Jill return from the clouds and tell Billy and Fixup how the giants have been treated. Jack regrets stealing the gold and heads back up the beanstalk with his band to return it and ask if the concert can be held in the giants’ mansion instead.

There, they hear Bash describing how lonely and misunderstood he feels (Misunderstood), prompting the band to encourage him to reconnect with the community. Miss Mayor and her cronies then arrive, and the truth about her corruption comes to light (The Mayor Vs The Giant).

The rest of the town follow up the beanstalk and hear the mayor’s plans. They unite and choose Bash as their new mayor. Miss Mayor falls from the clouds and disappears forever, while her cronies are persuaded to change their ways.

Bash and Blast offer their home as the venue for the concert, and Jack’s band finally perform. As the town dances to Jack’s music, the clouds burst with rain, ending the drought and saving Windy Bottom. From then on, Bash and Blast host a party every Saturday night, ensuring the town never forgets to celebrate (It’s A Celebration).
