Observing a particularly bright star in the sky, three astronomers recognise it as the star of a newborn king. Readying their camels, they travel west across the desert, eager to worship the baby boy. Cracking jokes aplenty to keep up their spirits, they journey first to Jerusalem, and then on to the little town Bethlehem. There, in a humble stable, surrounded by animals - not to mention a herd of shepherds and even some angels - they kneel before Jesus and offer their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

With six engaging songs, a funny  script and a host of wonderful characters, Wise Guys is a delightful retelling of the traditional nativity story.

Alongside the physical book, the digital download pack comprises all the songs, backing tracks, lyric slides and full book as a pdf. A CD is also available as an alternative or addition to the download pack. For a little extra, the editable Word.doc of the full script can also be purchased when the musical and a performance licence are bought, making it easy to adapt and adjust as you need to.

Overview

Of all the elements of the nativity story, the journey of the Magi is perhaps the most mysterious and intriguing. More commonly referred to as the Three Wise Men (or even Three Kings!), their story is mostly one of guess-work, with the gospels very short on any real detail (including, actually, how many of them there were!). Indeed, their story only features in the Gospel of Matthew, and much of this is taken up with their visit to King Herod. We don’t really even know where they come from – though Persia is generally deemed the most likely location – and we certainly don’t know how they managed to follow a star all the way to its resting place above Bethlehem. But their value to the story, their demonstration of the importance of Jesus’ birth and their recognition (through their gifts) of the impact his life was to have on the world, makes them truly compelling characters.

Synopsis

The narrators introduce us to the events of two thousand years ago in Nazareth, where a young woman called Mary was visited by the Angel Gabriel and told she was to have a very special baby.

The opening song then introduces us to the Wise Men and their studying of the stars (WISE GUYS).

The Wise Men observe a particular sky in the night sky and recognise it as the sign of the birth of a King. They saddle their camels and ready themselves for a journey west (LIGHTEN YOUR SUITCASE).

Caesar Augustus issues a decree that a census will be taken of the whole Roman Empire, and that everyone must go to their hometown in order to be registered. The Wise Men meet a number of the travellers as they continue their journey west.

Mary and Joseph are also on the move and arrive in the little town of Bethlehem. Eventually, they manage to find a place to stay and here, with ox and ass for company, baby Jesus is born (IN A LOWLY STABLE).

In the fields above Bethlehem, angels visit some shepherds and tell them of the arrival of baby Jesus (GOOD NEWS). The shepherds hurry to the stable, eager to see for themselves.

The Wise Men reach Jerusalem, where King Herod requests a meeting and asks them to let him know the whereabouts of the newborn King. They leave, vowing to themselves not to return (A STAR IS SHINING OVER BETHLEHEM).

Upon arrival in Bethlehem and make their way to the stable where they offer their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to baby Jesus (GOLD AND FRANKINCENSE AND MYRRH).
